I made this chic Zen pet bed using some newel posts. 

Here's how you can make one too, and/or the supplies you'll need to buy:

• Make a wooden box for your pet bed platform.  I used a wood box I already had laying around.
• Turn the box upside down.  
• Attach newel posts on all four ends, by first gluing them, and then screwing them to secure them to the base.  I used newel posts I found at a yard sale for only 50 cents a piece.
• Build the top canopy support using wood strips.  I found some scrap wood in my neighbor's garbage.  Cut the pieces to fit the top and screw them in place.
• Make a mattress out of any foam piece.  I custom fit my pet bed by cutting a piece of an old gym matt I had.  I took off the top vinyl covering and cut the piece of foam to fit the base of the bed.  And then, I cut a larger piece of the vinyl  to fit and tuck underneath  the foam mattress, and then glued it underneath the mattress, with a glue gun. I used a portion of the vinyl that didn't have any holes, so no little critters can jump in and hide. 
• Use any fabric you desire.  I took an old bathing suit cover-up and cut it into two pieces, using one for the bed spread, and the larger piece for the canopy, which also covers the back and sides of the bed.   This makes a cozy hide-away place for my kitty to feel safe and secure.
  
• To keep the bedding clean, I can just take off the covers and wash them, and just wipe the vinyl bedding with a cloth, using a disinfectant cleanser.
